Phineas Clark asked:

As Halloween drew to a close our blood sugar levels were primed and ready for the inevitable spike that can last from a few days to a few weeks. If your children were especially ambitious this Halloween you might have had enough candy to last until Christmas, when the true holiday season begins. And as all of our Moms used to say, “waste not want not”, so we ate this candy cache brought home by our mighty offspring, and it was a good thing, yes? We were helping our kids by preventing cavities, yes? The candy had to go somewhere, yes? Ummm… NO.

One celebrity I trained not long ago argued with me. She said that Xmas was the bane of her weight’s existence. She further surmised that with all the Christmas cookies and extra meals with relatives, her battle for weight control began every year with the 12 days of Xmas. I set her straight easily as I pointed out the bite-size Snickers bars she brought to the gym “for energy”, coincidentally, every November 1. You see, like most of us she had mercilessly stolen candy from her childs’ Halloween basket. It was then that I understood how winter pounds truly begin to show up on our bodies, and neither Saint Nick, Hannika, nor Chinese New Year had anything to do with it. It was the dreaded Halloween Candy Curse, and it is that which always starts us on our downhill, weight gaining, winter pounds.

And herein we have to ask the question, where did the red licorice and Reeses Pieces really go? Little Johnny was certainly looking for it on Halloween night. After all, he toiled for hours in a claustrophobic Ninja Turtles outfit to acquire it. He fended off a pirate, two Nuns, and Count Dracula and it’s just a shame that it went missing from the candy bowl. Of course we told our little darlings that too much candy wasn’t good for them, and of course we wanted to throw all that excess refined sugar in the trash. But inevitably was Moms voice again, shouting “Waste not want not!”!

And therein was how the supply of Reeses Peanut Butter Cups ended up in our secret kitchen drawer, from which we indulged later on in a twisted, guilty pleasure. Case closed. :-)

So anyway, the point of this article is not to thrash the holidays in any way. It’s to make you feel such an enormous amount of heart wrenching guilt that you immediately settle in to a nice carrot and celery snack, and try out some of these juicing recipes that will keep your blood sugar levels fine for next years’ holidays. :-)
