For Christmas, I’d do this….
- Standing Rib Roast
- Leek & Potato Gratin
- Slow cooked green beans
- Yorshire Pudding
- Trifle for dessert
All I know about New Years food tradition is that black-eyed peas and greens are supposed to be served. The black-eyed peas sybolize coins and the greens symbolize cash. If you eat them on NYE, you’ll be wealthy in the coming year. Not sure about the pork except that pork goes well with the peas & greens.

My landlord has this thing about animals that walk backwards and not eating them on New Years, to promote going forward in the New Year. I do not remember her ethnicity but it was kind a neat lil tradition.

In the South, we make blackeyed peas and collards on New Years Day. The blackeyed peas are for good luck and the collards represent money for the new year. We typically use pork to season both of these items; such as neck bones, fat back, etc.

For Christmas, we go to the Chinese restaurant. I’ll be going to my parents’ for New Years because my mom does a good luck food brunch. She makes greens (symbol for money), cornbread (a symbol for gold), black-eyed peas (a symbol for money also) and pork loin.
The reason for the pork is because pigs are thought to be a symbol of progress. They push forward, rooting themselves in the ground before moving.
You’re not supposed to eat winged food because your fortune could fly away, or chicken because the scratch backwards. Or lobster because they move backwards also.

A family member usually wants to make tamales….It’s a lot of work but if you get a bunch of family together it goes by quick. We end up making enough to until the new year! Happy Holidays!
